In October 2023, the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) renewed AIChE鈥檚 Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment (RAPID) Institute for an additional five years, and signed the renewal contract in September 2024. Although currently there is significant confusion related to DOE and other granting agency funding, the promised $40 million investment will propel research, development, and demonstration of advanced process technologies to enable more resilient, lower-cost, and reduced-energy manufacturing in the chemical process industries. In 2024, RAPID identified four industrial application areas of focus 鈥� specialty chemicals, commodity chemicals, low-carbon fuels, and carbon circularity and renewable feedstocks 鈥� and investigated the barriers preventing these focus areas from meeting their economic, energy, and sustainability goals.

A few barriers common across the four application areas included renewable feedstock variability, supply chain challenges (including electrical grid availability), and moving to a modular and distributed manufacturing paradigm. Overcoming these barriers will require innovative technologies, process intensification, and scalable new approaches to manufacturing. To that end, a key deliverable of RAPID 2.0 will be the development of a methodology that will help engineers determine if a novel technology is ready for scale-up.
