Doing a World of Good: Safety and Ethical Practice for Undergraduate ChEs
More than ten years ago, AIChE Foundation convened a group of industry leaders to help understand how they could work together to accelerate process safety education and better prepare chemical engineering undergraduates as they enter the profession.
鈥淚t was so rewarding to build relationships with faculty members and hear how they will incorporate process safety concept into their curricula, to ensure that their students are fully prepared for the future challenges of the chemical industry鈥, said Kathy Kas, Dow鈥檚 Environmental, Health & Safety Fellow.
Upon the official launch of the Doing a World of Good campaign, the first program developed and funded was the Undergraduate Process Safety & Learning Initiative (UPSLI). Run by AIChE鈥檚 Center for 91成人短视频 Process Safety (CCPS), UPSLI is comprised of three areas:
鈥 Faculty Workshops 鈥 providing educators with an in-depth look at the importance of process safety education, and tools and case studies to easily enable integration into their curriculum for undergraduates
鈥 SAChE 鈥 extending the cooperative effort between CCPS and engineering schools to provide teaching materials and programs that bring elements of process safety into the education of undergraduates at no cost
鈥 Student Bootcamps 鈥 providing an introduction to chemical engineering students on how leading companies across a variety of chemical process industry sectors manage process safety to prevent catastrophic accidents involving toxic, highly reactive, and flammable materials.
In only ten years, 92,867 students earned SAChE certification, 1,000+ faculty members attended company-hosted workshops to enhance their understanding and improve their curriculum and 1,447 students gained a comprehensive understanding of process safety through bootcamps led at their university by corporate partners.
Our commitment to Safety & Ethical Practice continues. This year, AdvanSix, BASF and LyondellBasell will underwrite student bootcamps at three universities. This training bolsters the undergraduate experience, provides knowledge not easily obtained in a traditional classroom setting and enhances their resume making them more attractive to future employers. Additionally each will see how their actions and those of our industry are actively keeping their employees and their communities safer.
