Andrew Fearnside

Andrew is a European Patent attorney at Mewburn Ellis LLP, one or Europe’s largest IP firms, and he has over 20 years of experience working with innovators in both the academic and the private sectors.  He is also a physicist with a PhD in theoretical quantum physics. His PhD research focussed on developing computational simulations of quantum-mechanical models of multi-electron atoms when bathed within intense laser light, and he pursued this research further as a post-doctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Germany. Andrew then embarked on a new career in Intellectual Property Law, at Mewburn Ellis LLP.



 At Mewburn Ellis LLP Andrew leads the quantum technology team, which specialises in developing and managing patent portfolios in quantum technology for clients in Europe, USA and elsewhere. Andrew’s clients include corporations, SMEs, Start-ups and Universities in a range of quantum technologies including quantum computing, quantum information processing and algorithms, quantum sensing, quantum communications and more. Other areas of expertise include photonics and lasers, optics, ion optics and mass spectrometry, radar and antenna systems. Andrew has extensive experience of IP portfolio management and strategy, including ‘freedom-to-operate’ and ‘due diligence’ analysis, to help build his client’s IP portfolios and grow their businesses.



Andrew also has a passion for astronomy and is also an elected Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.
